The Canon Pixma iP6700D was released in the end of the year 2006 and was the successor of the highly successful Canon Pixma iP6600D. The Canon Pixma iP6600D was a printer with features such as, built-in card reader, 3.5″ LCD display, and a good set of controls on its top. Its disadvantage lied in its slow and fuzzy text printing which made it suitable only for photo printing. The Pixma iP6700D is a versatile photo printer that is compatible with wide range of sources and a lot of its features are similar to that of its predecessor. It has been loaded with features such as the FINE technology, ChromaLife100 and a lot more to produce high quality and long lasting photos.

Stylish but bulky design:

Canon Pixma iP6700D Colour Photo Printer is not a compact photo printer weighing 16.5 pounds and with dimensions as 16.9″ x 7.2″ x 12″ (H x W x D). And, if the front paper tray is extended you will have to be having another 8″ extra for the depth of the printer. Though it is not compact and bulky, it still looks good with its smooth curvy designs and greyish silver finish.  This mid sized printer can be placed tight close to the walls as it has front loading and front exiting paper path.

The tilting 3.5-inch LCD display:

The Canon Pixma iP6700D Inkjet Printer is equipped with an extra large 3.5” colour LCD display that makes viewing and editing very simple. Using the large LCD display and the control panel, you will be able to view the printing process and fine tune them to produce amazing results. This large LCD display can be tilted to any angle and so you will be able to see the images clearly at any height. You can browse the images in your memory card as you can do in your PC or digi cam. The processes of preview, edit and select can be done in a breeze with this large display and the control panel.

Control panel explained:

Right in the center of the control panel is the four-way navigator, with a OK button in the center for the purposes of navigation and selection. Towards the left of the control panel are, the power button, feed switch to select the source and another two buttons in the bottom that launches the Easy Photoprint for browsing the pictures in the memory card and saves them automatically to a folder in your hard drive, the menu button and a back button. Towards the right are the zoom-in and zoom-out rocker, a trimming button that allows you to crop the images, the search button that finds you a group of images photographed in a specified date, the settings button and the menu button.

Useful ports:

A built-in memory card reader is just hidden behind a panel in the front panel’s right end. An IrDA sensor is available right below the card reader along with a USB port. The memory card reader allows you to print images from a memory card without the need of a PC, the IrDA sensor is for printing images directly form a mobile phone or from the other IrDA compatible devices and USB port is for the PictBridge printing or printing from an USB flash drive.

Set-up:

Set-up of this Canon photo printer is very easy and straight forward. The instruction manual provided is very informative. You must do the following processes one by one, the print head assembly which is removable must be installed first. Once that is done, unwrap and install the ink tanks followed by the driver software. After that all that you need to do is, connect the input cable and turn on the photo printer.

Features:

Though the features of iP6700D from Canon is very much identical to the features of iP660D, the main up gradation is that, the photo contact sheets can accommodate around 35 images. Canon has also provided a lot more of editing options when printing without using a PC. Though Canon claims to have updated the print engine in order to provide faster performance, there is no considerable difference in the print speed in iP6700D. It prints just 3 pages per minute, no where near the speed of a laser printer. Canon can take its inspiration form its own Canon MP830 all-in-one printer. Though the text printing speed is very less, the photo printing speed is very good producing just less than 1.5 colour 4×6 prints per minute.

Versatility:

The Canon Pixma iP6700D Colour inkjet printer is a versatile photo printer that provides you with various ways of PC free photo printing which includes printing directly from mobile phone, digital camera, digital video camera and memory cards.  iP6700D uses Canon’s ChromaLife100 system, that resists fading for about 100 years.

Memory card support:

The two built-in flash card slots supports Microdrive, Memory Stick , MultiMediaCard , SD Memory Card , SmartMedia Card , Memory Stick Pro and CompactFlash Card. The Mini SD, Memory Stick DUO and xD-Picture Card can also be used with the optional adapters. These card slots can be used for the direct printing of the JPEG and the TIFF images and they can also be used as card readers to transfer images to your hard drives. The Canon card memory software that is included in the package gives you options to set the card slots to either read only, which is default or, read write, in case you need to copy files to a card.

FINE technology:

Canon has employed the FINE technology, that is, Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering to its print heads. With the help of this exclusive technology, sub-micron level precision is achieved by the print heads during the process of manufacturing. Canon boasts that its FINE print heads are the only consumer oriented print heads that achieve 2400 dots per inch nozzle pitch accurately. They are also capable of printing in high speed over wide areas in a single pass.

Double sheet feeders:

As is the case of all the other Pixma photo printers, in addition to the standard flip-up  auto sheet feeder available in the top of the printer, there is a secondary front feeding paper cassette that slides in to the bottom of the printer. This allows you to feed two different kinds of sheets or different sizes of sheets to be fed to the printer simultaneously and in that way, you can print simultaneously too. In that case you can print in a combination of documents and photos or photos of different sizes at once without stopping and interrupting the printing process. You can swap between the two sources very easily by using the paper feed selector that is present in the front of the printer or you can do it even through the printer driver. Each feeder has the capacity of 150 sheets and as the source and be set automatically, you can print up to 300 sheets without any interruption. The printer automatically switches between them when it runs out of paper.

The loaders can support A4 size sheets, 4” x 6” photo paper, 5” x 7” photo paper, A4 size photo papers and #10 size envelops. We recommend the lower tray for you photo papers as it is embedded inside, it is safe from dust and dirt.

The in-built duplexer:

The Canon Pixma iP6700D Duplex photo printer sports an in-built duplexer that prints both sides of a sheet either it is a photo paper or a plain one. In this way it reduces fifty percentage of your paper wastage. In that way is also allows you to create ready to be stapled photo albums, news letters and your own product catalogs. We do not recommend photo papers less than 5” x 7” for duplex printing.

Performance:

The quality of the photographs were very impressive keeping in mind the fact that it is a six colour printer. The complete range is not as wide as the ones that you get from an eight ink or more printer. The printer was able to reproduce even some of the finest and complex details such as subtle textures and petals. Some of the blues in the photos tended more towards the purple side, casual photographers will not mind though. The colour balance of the images can be easily adjusted using the colour balance function available. If you ask us about the text performance, printing important text documents using Pixma iP6700D is not recommended. The black text suffered from bleeding ink and the diagonal lines look jaggy. The text is readable, but not as good as the one you would get from a laser printer.

Canon Pixma iP6700D ink jet photo printer is compatible with Windows 98 and latter versions and the Mac platforms from the Mac OS X v 10.2 to latest.

Verdict:

The technologies used, 3.5” LCD display, the smart LED equipped ink tanks, canon’s advanced paper handling system, all of these makes the photo printer nothing less than adorable. But, if you are having heavy text printing needs at home or small offices, then Canon Pixma iP6700D is not the one for you. But if your priority purpose is photo printing, it is a great option.
