Photosmart 385 – Compact, Portable, Inkjet, White Colour Photo Printer from Hewlett Packard

HP introduced its range of portable photo printers, a few years back and the range was pretty impressive. The printers had a great deal of portability, with a good print quality too. This range is updated in the name of HP Photosmart 385. The HP Photosmart 385 is the enhanced version of the HP Photosmart 375 compact photo printer. Let us see in the following review, what this printer has got on offer for us. The highlight seller point of this printer is its compactness. This latest addition to HP’s rapidly growing range of portable printers are designed with maximum portability and ease of use in mind.

Ditto design:

HP Photosmart 385 Go Go offers all the main features that was appreciated and liked in its predecessor. It seems to offer the extreme portability offered by its predecessor by maintaining the dimensions as the same by having (H X W X D) inches 4.5” x 8.7” x 4.6” and weighs just 2.6 pounds. This light weighted portable printer is suitable for any social occasions. On the surface, actually nothing has changed. Go Go is virtually identical in shape and size and we are hard pushed to tell the difference as only the bar number on the side of the unit.

2.5-inch LCD display:

The Photosmart 385 Go Go has a wide 2.5″ LCD display that allows the user to preview their photos and even edit them directly from the memory cards. This eliminates the need of any intermediate PC. With the help of this LCD display, you will have all the controls in your finger tips. This 2.5″ flip-up colour image display itself allows the user to crop zoom and print the images. The controls have been clearly marked and very easy to use.

Ample connectivity:

The HP Photosmart 385 Inkjet printer is having unlimited connectivity options along with a host of very impressive on-board tools for selecting, editing and printing the photos, either in rich and robust colour or even professional quality black and white photos. This HP portable photo printer comes with 4 memory card slots in the front of the printer. In order to print photos from memory cards, all that you have to do is, insert the card, choose your set of photos and just hit over print. In just a minute and a half, you will find your photo that is crisp clear.

Having a USB port too, the user can always connect any USB compatible devices to the printer like, mobile phones, Tablets or even UMPCs. Another very handy connectivity feature of the HP 385 is that, with the addition of the optional HP Bluetooth wireless printer adaptor, the user can print wirelessly from Bluetooth enabled devices like Tablet PC, mobiles, etc. The standard power cable provided aids in using the printer at home or indoors. An optional in-car adapter is also available to be used with the printer, so that you can print even while travelling with complete freedom. That is not the end of the options HP has got on offer for the users. An optional rechargeable battery lets the users to print up to a whooping 75 prints between charges.

Set-up and Installation of HP Photosmart 385:

The installation of HP 385 can be done in a snap as the quick start guide that is provided with the printer has neat and detailed diagrams. The overall process of opening the package, having the inks installed to printing the photos takes just around five minutes.

Feature enhancements:

Though the design remains to be the same, there are a few differences as far as the features are concerned, if not, what is the point in releasing a new model? One of the greatest inclusions is the ability of the HP 385  printer to print the panoramic shots using the new HP paper  stock. The other features included concerns with what can be done with the images once they are loaded in the printer’s memory.

HP has equipped the Go Go with the “Real Life Technology” that allows the photosmart 385 to automatically detect and remove any Red-eye errors and enhance the details in dark areas with adaptive lighting, giving the maximum possible output. The Viera Inks used by HP gives you sharp photos that last over 82 years. Photosmart 385 White Colour Photo Printer provides the user with an option of printing a single, couple or three photos on each 4×6 borderless prints. The HP Photosmart 385 prints at the speed of 60 seconds per print, which allows the users to share their treasured memories instantaneously.

No waterproof or smudge proof:

The only issue that was carried over from HP 375 to the Photosmart 385 is that, the prints are not water proof or smudge proof. The water proof and smudge proof features are offered by its competitors, products  such as, Epson PictureMate 240. If the photo is picked up just after printing, it is sure to leave a thumb print and even after several days of drying, sweaty hands will smudge the picture and a droplet of water would leave a water strain. Hence, be extra careful while handling the photos.

Print speed:

As we had mentioned earlier, the excellent picture quality does not make you wait either. HP Photosmart 385 prints a standard 10 x 15cm photo in less than a minute and very versatile printer can also be used to print 10 x 30cm photos in landscape format. The variety of HP photo packs offers the photographers with the best value in photo printing.

HP offers HP Photosmart 385 Compact Photo Printer one year limited warranty for parts and labour.

Overall, we are quite impressed with HP Photosmart 385 Compact Photo Printer. It has got good print quality, great deal of portability and the overall package is a top-notch. Having most of the features that you would ever expect from a compact photo printer, HP Photosmart 385 has our strong recommendations.
