Samsung SPP 2040 is an easily portable photo printer. It has an appealing appearance with its 4×6 inch dye-sublimation prints, compact chassis, stand alone operation and multiple connectivity options.
Samsung is the second major manufacturer of a photo printer based on the technology dye sublimation. The dye-sublimation printing process brings you very closer to the photo-lab quality printing at home. It is considered to be a tough competitor to Canon’s Selphy CP-500. SPP 2040 uses the same kind of consumables and print engine.
This 300×300 dpi photo printer is a little space consuming one. It may appear to consume less space at the first look but when you introduce the paper tray and leave some space for the paper travel at the back of the printer, SPP2040 claims more space. It requires even more space at the sides for the three-colour dye-sub ribbon cartridge and for plugging in the power cord, a PictBridge compatible camera, a USB cable etc.
Using the left or right buttons in the four-way cursor pad, you can view the images on the flip-up 2inch LCD. By just tapping the centre OK button, you can print the image and by using the up and down arrows, you can select the number of copies. The “print” and “cancel” buttons are used to initiate and cease the process.
The image selection can be fastened by pressing the zoom out button which switches to four or nine image thumbnail view. Using the zoom in button you can crop the images using six fixed increments from1.25x to 3x, everything in the 4:6 aspect ratio. The special effects include black and white, sepia, vivid, antique, red, green and blue stones. And the other effects include warmer, cooler, less yellow and less blue adjustments. Adjustments can also be made in the brightness and sharpness. You have options to do have bordered or borderless printing on a special paper which has snap-off tabs at each of the ends.
You can squeeze 4, 6, 8 or even 16 images into a single 4×6-inch sheet using the layout options. The card slots are present on the front of the printer which can support most of the common types of memory cards.
It takes around 65 seconds for one print. The colours are accurate and neutral. The flesh tones are depicted in an impressive manner. The saturation and detailing is good. This printer could also do even without a computer. There is no facility to run the printer on batteries for the external usage.
