The Sony Picture Station DPP-FP90 is the latest addition to Sony’s small but growing compact photo printer line. The current series of Sony’s photo printers are known for their compact design and printing snaps in less than a minute. Being compact and fast let us see if it produces attractive prints which is the main feature that is to be considered while buying a photo printer.

Sony DPP-FP90 Compact Photo Printer

Very compact design:

Sony DPP-FP90 colour photo printer having its compact dimensions as, 7.1 x 5.5 x 2.5 inches. It has a simple design and is having a large 3.6 inch LCD display which is bright, clear and is much bigger than any other displays of this price range. This LCD display can be tilted and so, it can be adjusted for easy viewing. The overall design is somewhat similar to that of Canon Selphy CP series. The printer also interestingly possesses a carrying handle which you cannot find in the Canon models. Just next to the display, it has the simple and clearly labeled buttons.

Good options for connectivity:

The DPP-FP90 Compact Photo Printer has wide range of connectivity options. It sports compact flash, SD and Memory Stick Pro slots which enable you to copy images  from your memory cards. The printer also possesses the Pictbridge support which allows you to copy and print images directly from digital cameras. The USB slot allows you to plug in any USB compatible devices such as your flash drive or PC etc.

On-screen menus:

The on screen menus are a breeze to use, courtesy, the big 3.6” display. The menus display the options as either text or icon. The set-up of the printer is so easy that you can get your first print in just five minutes after you had unpacked the device. The installation of the software takes just over three minutes.

Manual or auto editing:

Once you have provided this compact printer with a source, the images appear on the 3.6″ display of the printer for you to view and edit them before they could be printed. You can edit your images either manually or automatically. In order to edit your images for saturation, brightness or red eye removal, you can use the auto touch-up control that can be found on the facia of the printer.

Superimpose and Filter features:

Some of the other operations that can be performed apart from editing are, application of a range of filters, superimpose text, creation of calendars, ID photos and hence you can you can select from a range of other layouts to create index cards for your prints. Superimpose feature helps in personalising your photos as you can fill them with special messages like happy birthday, thankyou and congratulations. The colour and the placement of the superimposed text can be customised, by accessing the cursor buttons on the printer. With the filter feature, you are provided with six options.

Good set of features:

When it comes to features it is really very little that Sony DPP-FP90 Portable Photo Printer is missing. It offers extensive editing capabilities with a one-button print process and simple set-up for operation virtually anywhere. The DPP-FP90 uses Sony’s Bionz image processor which aids in the quick operation of the printer. Sony DPP-FP90 uses the dye-sublimation technology to ensure that colour tone is even in each of the prints.

Sony DPP-FP90 Portable Photo Printer

Speedy prints of awful quality:

Sony DPP-FP90 dye-sublimation photo printer gives your print of size 4″ X 6″ in just 45 seconds which is a very impressive speed for a printer of this category. Though it has impressive print speeds, the quality of the prints are not that impressive though. The prints are unappealing, flat and had inaccurate colour. The skin tones look very inaccurate and the darker skin tones looked almost blue. The printer’s colour gamut performance is average for dye sublimation printer, managing to reproduce just 45 percent of the possible colours. More sophisticated ink-jet Photo Printers can achieve colour gamuts of 50th to 60th percentiles.

Costly operational costs:

No paper or ink cartridge is supplied along with the printer, which is a shame. When we calculated the initial price of the photo printer along with the cost of the paper and ink, the printing cost shoots up to more than triple the time of the money demanded by the wide variety of online stores who offer services for as low as 10p.

Warranty:

Sony offers DPP-FP90 a warranty of one year.

Verdict:

Sony DPP-FP90 colour photo printer has an equal balance of both pros and cons. Its speedy prints, connectivity, design and compactness being the pros, the expensive print costs and the quality of the prints are disappointing. We feel that the Canon Selphy CP730 which is a dye sublimation printer too, costing much lesser than the DPP-FP90 is a better option. You can also catch up with the Epson PictureMate 2400 which costs almost half the price and gives out prints that look much better.
